So the newest episode is a look-back on the Shichibukai and the admirals.

You know, usually I like the voice actors the anime chooses, but a few of the Shichibukai's never really sat well with me. I always thought Mihawk would sound more refined, and I wish they'd gotten someone for Doflamingo who could pull him off with a lot more flair and crazy.

I didn't used to like Kuma's super mild voice because I'd assumed it would be a lot deeper but I'll admit it's grown on me.

My friend mailed me a trio of Zoro/Tashigi doujin today. They're not worth the effort of scanning in full, but this page is cute.

One thing I like about One Piece: every character lives up to their hype. Poison, earthquakes, diamonds, giant Buddhas. These are people the protagonists aren't even close to. Contrast, say, Bleach, where there are also many such characters hyped up in the same way... only to get utterly owned by the villains (or, if they're villains, by Ichigo) to hype THEM up. Not so in One Piece, where you get the feeling that both sides of any given conflict are generally pretty equal.

There's really only one exception I've noticed: Smoker. He was commonly guessed to be one of the most powerful characters in the series... until Boa beat him in like three hits using only martial arts.

I think it depends. For instance, there could be a character who's powers are nigh impossible for Luffy to contend with but whom another member of the crew would have very little problem dealing with. Sort of how Luffy was only able to defeat Eminem because he was conveniently immune to most of his attacks, but everyone else was fucked.

Has anyone noticed this pattern in One Piece? At the end of each major storyline, there is a HOLYFUCKAWESOME long arc containing the storyline's climactic fights and then a short mini-arc that seems inconequential at first glance but are actually even more important than the big arcs in he long run:

Arlong ------> Laboon (introduced Log Pose, the Rumbars, some seemingly random facts that turn out to be important to Gold Roger's life story, and of course Laboon himself)

Alabasta ------> Jaya (Sengoku, Warlords, Five Elders, Blackbeard and Whitebeard crews introduced, and more on Shanks)

Skypiea ------> Longland (introduced the Admirals, sparked the first big powerup in the series, first hints Robin may not be all she seems)

Enies ------> Water 7 part 2 (Luffy's family, Koby and Helmeppo return, Smoker promoted, Ace meets BB, Shanks meets WB)

Marinford ------> Current (Kong, Luffy's message, more powerups?)

Well, in most of those the story of the mini-arc itself isn't directly related to the plot-important stuff.

It's more that Oda is taking it as an opportunity for a "Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away..." thing or having the Strawhats semi-randomly stumble onto someone whose future importance would not be evident otherwise (Dragon, Smoker, Blackbeard+crew) so when we're shown what they're doing between then and when they interact with the Strawhats in a more meaningful manner we're not left pondering why the hell we're hearing about these people.
