I think Kishi is slightly forgetting his own canon. Madara can't possibly be so ridiculously overpowered because he was defeated by the first Hokage (and presumably killed or died shortly thereafter, because he was revived in his prime, indicating he died in his prime) unless we want to imply that Hashirama was ALSO ridiculously overpowered. How, I don't know. I certainly don't think he beat the WTFHAX-Super-Saiyan-Susanoo with his goddamn trees.
I just don't like it that Kishimoto is trying to have it both ways in regard to generational power levels. He goes out of his way to showcase how each current generation is stronger and better than the previous; and then he tosses in a few old guys who are somehow more powerful than anyone. It's reminding me of Dragonball Z at this point: all the hype is put on Gohan, Goten, and Trunks (the new generation) as being of greater potential, but when push comes to shove, it's somehow Goku (the old generation) who ends up pulling more power out of freaking nowhere. Same thing with Itachi and Sasuke. Sasuke is supposed to have exceeded Itachi in every possible way, showcasing his growth and legitimizing his spot as a major villian, even beating Itachi in a one-on-one battle. But Itachi was actually dying of tuburculosis or something and at like 1% of his former strength, which was the only reason Sasuke won; and then it's Itachi who beats Kabuto in the end using another Sharingan jutsu while Sasuke just stands there, uselessly, being shocked at the goings-on and unable to fight on that level.
And now, when five kages can't even come close to beating a guy that was once beaten by ONE kage (and who hasn't gotten any more powerful since then because he was DEAD) it's gotten ridiculous. I'm not complaining about ridiculous shounen power-levels — I expect that; I'm complaining about the bizzare choice to make people from ancient history so overpowered, which flies in the face of shounen convention of having the youngsters be the most powerful ones. There are better ways of giving advantages to the villains other than pulling random stuff out of nowhere that (if not outright destroys) conflicts with established canon.
At this point, I'm half-expecting the Sage of Six Paths to show up with Original-Pure-Form Rinnesharibyakugan: I'm The Precursor, Bitches, no Jutsu which can cause anyone to disentigrate just by looking in their general direction. I mean, really, it's the only logical conclusion when each PREVIOUS generation is at least five times more powerful than the next.
