Alright, finished Unlimited Blade Works. I'm a little unclear about a few things with the ending (what the hell happened to Gil after you beat him? Isn't Archer dead?) but in general I think it was a pretty damn awesome ride. There was a lot less boring bullshit than Fate route, that's for sure.

On the other hand...except for possibly the final fight and Kuzuki's first fight, I can't think of a single scene with quite as much impact and HOLY SHIT as when Saber first unveiled Excalibur. So yeah, much better on the whole, but I think Fate route still holds the prize for single-scene impact.

On the other other hand, Lancer was all over the fucking place in this route, and he was consistently the best character in any given scene. Fuck, that was awesome.

I'm still confused about Archer's happy ending too. If Shirou still believes in his ideal, doesn't that mean he's still going to contract with the world and end up like Archer? Is it because he loves it that he will still be OK with while Archer isn't? Or is it because he realizes it's a flawed ideal anyway, making the fall for him not as great as the one Archer suffered?

I think it's more that the problem with Archer wasn't the ideal, it was him blindly following it and never thinking about his own needs. Archer became embittered to the point where he began to think that the ideal itself was at fault, but the real problem was lack of moderation.

Nasu says that the chances of Shirou becoming Archer (yeah not even going to bother spoilering it anymore I guess), are 25% in Fate and 10% in Unlimited Bladeworks. This is the extent of the information we're given circumstantially.

He was saving a bit of mana because he knew Gil was still around to be dealt with and hid away. Nasu says that Rho Aias that got traced during Shirou vs Gil was Archer helping out from a distance.

It's a stretch but it's never bothered me a huge amount.

I think the factor that will keep Shirou from becoming Archer again is Rin. Archer, if I recall correctly, says as much when he's talking to Rin before he disappears. "I couldn't sway him in the end, so it looks like I'll have to entrust that job to you." Or something like that.
